The Half Ton Man

Tuesday, February 7th, 2006

I was just wondering if anyone else watched Bodyshock: The Half Ton Man? It was, whilst been very worrying, very intruiging. Basically there exists what the show dubbed 'super obese' people out there that basically eat themselves to death. The show didn't just point these people out it also investigated what the reasons could be. Medically it's simple, too mnay calories over a prolongued period and not enough excercise. But that being said, what causes them to over eat?

Some scientists think its the 'fat gene' which they think may be a missing gene stopping the production of hormones that make you feel content. These food addicts were medically compared to heroin addicts in that the same brain activitiy is shown by both when with and without thier vices.

Most of the people who were classed super obese and made a recovery generally relapsed and slipped back into thier old ways. The way one guy put it was, see how well a heroin addict does if he has to have a little bit of heroin each day.

A very good show and one thats made me even more determined to get in shape.

Tired

What a weekend it's been. On friday Claire came over and we watched Four Brothers starring Mark Whalberg(Boogie Nights, The Italian Job), Tyrese Gibson(2 Fast 2 Furious), Andre Benjamin(hip hop duo Outkast) and Garrett Hedlund(Troy) and it was fantastic, it is an utterly brilliant film about four misdirected brothers love for their mother and their journey in exacting revenge for her death. I highly reccomend that anyone watch it. We also watched The 40 Year Old Virgin which was also a very good film indeed.

Saturday me and Claire went for breakfast at Mister Macks on newland ave and I was mildly impressed with the little greasy spoon cafe. It was nothing special by any means but I ordered an english breakfast, Claire ordered a bacon and sausage sandwich and we both enjoyed it. We then went into Hull for what can only be described as somewhat of a confusing escapade. Basically myself, Claire, Sam and Kaspar went to the hotel on Paragon street(can't remember the name) and took part in what can only be described as a pay to stay auction. The whole thing stank of a scam so we didn't stay. An experiance though.

We(me and Claire) also went to see Derailed at CineWorld at Kingswood and I must say it's the first non rubbish chick flick I've watched with Jennifer Aniston(Freinds) in and she was pretty darn good! It also had Vincent Cassel(Oceans Twelve) and Clive Owen(Sin City) both of whom where superb!

Last Night me, Claire and Phil went out to Asylum and had a boogie, so I was shattered this morning lol. So to wake us up we went for dinner at the Zacharia Pearson which was ok, no write-up though. Ok, a little one. They got my order wrong, the table was dirty and people were complaining about food being over an hour and a half late. Ours was on time and only the top of my steak and mushroom pie was sub-par because it was overcooked. There, short and sweet, unlike their service ;)

Tonight after Claire had set off for Leeds I sat and watched Invasion starring William Fichtner(Armageddon) which is a great series and Gangs of New York which is also very good.

So this weekend I've mostly eaten out, watched films and realised I need to make some sort of IMDB linking system.

Google Search History

Friday, February 3rd, 2006

For those people stuck in the dark ages or for those that simply worry far too much about big brother, Google Search History is fantastic. I'm sat at university and am looking up information on using XML configuration files in C# after my lecture on Software engineering with Rob Miles.

So I log into my Google homepage which is fully customizable and google for my info. When I find the information I need I don't need to email the link to myself so I can pick it up later, I don't need to write it down or bookmark it and ftp my bookmarks from uni. I can simply log back into my google homepage at home, look at my search history and look at all the links that I clicked after searching for a particular term. I have found lots of uses for google history, it's great to be able to look for something I searched for, seeing as like many people I delete my history (space saving, honest guv!) automatically. For anyone who hasn't used it I suggest at least a trial run as it also lets you view your searching habits (time of day, day of week etc).

Some people worry that google are collecting an obscene amount of knowledge on users and that pretty soon they will know everything about you. Meh. In a world where people are becoming more and more dependant on convenience is this such a terrible thing? I guess it's an issue of morality. Some people protect and guard information about themselves as a matter of priority, I on the other hand, whilst don't like the idea of serious matters like data theft and take every measure against it, don't really mind google knowing what I look at on the internet. Infact the readers of this blog proberbly know more about me that would be cause for worry than Google do.

Oh well, I just thought i'd post something of interest while I while away an hour between lectures.
